Chinese-born Uma Wang trained in textiles in Shanghai and in fashion design at Central St. Martins, London before launching her own label in 2005. Her influences are as eclectic as her lifestyle - in the past seasons, she has looked at 19th century French wallpapers and East European travellers’ blankets for inspiration – but she constantly draws on the rich material culture of her native China.
“For me, fabric is everything” – Wang confides. She spends months developing materials for each collection. Her silhouettes are full of quiet grace, and the subtle detailing of her garments reveal hours of meticulous work only possible for a brand that doesn’t believe in mass production. Weightless fabrics, rich textures and body-hugging silhouettes give their owners a sensation of having a “personal cloud” floating around them; an exquisite cocoon that is both comforting and refined.
